Art From the Lathe - Selections From the AAW Permanent Collection

Selected from the American Association of Woodturners'  permanent collection, Art From the Lathe features works by well-known studio woodturners. Woodturning (carving using the lathe) dates back to at least 1700 BCE, and for much of its history was primarily a practical craft practiced by unknown craftsmen. For the artists featured in Art From the Lathe, woodturning is a melding of the skills and traditions of the past with new sculptural possibilities.

The long and rich history of traditional turning is shown through displays of functional domestic items from the 1800s, and an educational area, Touch This! provides insight into the history, processes, and materials of turning.

Visitors can see live woodturning demonstrations on the third Sunday of each month, and the gallery has a small gift store featuring work by local and national artists and craftspeople.
